About 12 Petalled Lotus
Learning About Being Human, Together
12 Petalled Lotus is human development education.
At its heart is something quite simple:
we are human beings getting together to learn about being human.
There is a great deal we can know about how human beings develop. We can learn about the body and nervous system, attachment and relationship, emotional life and identity, adaptation and belonging, caregiving, grief and loss, aging, meaning and the many experiences that shape us across a lifetime.
12 Petalled Lotus brings these areas of understanding into conversation with the lives we are actually living.
Because human development isn't only something to study.
It is happening to all of us.
What If We Had More of a Map?
Much of our development happens before we have language for understanding it.
We learn about relationship by being in relationships. We adapt to the environments around us. We develop expectations about ourselves and others. We encounter belonging and exclusion, love and loss, caregiving and change. Our identities take shape. Our bodies respond. And we continue developing as our lives unfold.
Sometimes we reach a point in life and wonder:
How did I get here?
Human development can give us context for that question.
12 Petalled Lotus offers a map that can help us understand more of the territory we are travelling.
A map can help us find our bearings without deciding our destination.
Understanding Is Enough
Sometimes learning why something makes sense in the context of our life is valuable in itself.
Within 12 Petalled Lotus, understanding has value in its own right.
An adaptation that once seemed like a flaw may become understandable when we see the circumstances in which it developed. A relationship pattern may look different when we understand what we learned about connection. An emotional response may make more sense when we consider the experiences surrounding it.
Within 12PL, adaptation is understood as an intelligent human response to lived experience rather than a personal defect or failure.
Understanding does not create an obligation to change.
And when there is something we would like to experience differently, understanding more about how human beings develop can help us recognize influences, capacities, choices and possibilities that may previously have been difficult to see.
What we do with that understanding remains our own.
Each of Us Brings a Human Life
There is a body of learning within 12 Petalled Lotus, and there is someone to guide the exploration—to bring knowledge and context, ask questions, help make connections and create conditions in which people can learn.
And then there is something equally important:
you bring your life.
Every person who participates brings experiences, relationships, questions, perspectives and ways of understanding the world that no one else can bring in quite the same way.
This makes learning participatory and reciprocal.
We listen. We wonder. We reflect. We become curious about how another person's life came to be the life it is.
Sometimes someone else's experience gives us language for our own.
Sometimes our experience helps illuminate theirs.
Together, we illuminate the experience of each other's lives.
Belonging Is Part of How We Learn
12 Petalled Lotus comes alive through participation.
When you arrive here, you are invited into a group of people who are doing something very ordinary and, we think, very worthwhile:
trying to understand human-ness a little more deeply.
You can arrive with what you know and what you don't know, with your questions, your experiences and your life as it is.
Human beings develop in relationship, and relationship remains central to learning, caregiving, belonging and participation throughout life.
Belonging is part of how we learn.
What Can Grow Between Us
Something interesting can happen when people spend time learning about being human together.
We begin to recognize what we share.
We also encounter difference.
And when we encounter difference, we can become curious about it.
How did you come to see the world that way?
What happened in your life that shaped that response?
What might I understand differently because I have listened to you?
Curiosity invites us to become interested in the human life behind what we encounter while still leaving room for discernment and difference.
From participation and reciprocity can grow understanding.
From understanding can grow belonging.
From belonging can grow community.
And compassion has more room to emerge.
This is part of the larger hope within 12 Petalled Lotus: that learning about human development can influence not only how we understand ourselves, but how we live among one another.
As we learn about being human together, something can become better between us.
A better us.
A better world.
The Pathways Give Us Places to Explore
The twelve Pathways give this exploration structure while leaving each human life free to find its own way.
They are interconnected rather than sequential. People can enter through different questions, relationships, experiences, transitions, losses, caregiving roles or stages of life, and return to the Pathways differently as their lives and understanding continue to develop.
The twelve Heart Qualities give the Pathways their names.
Within 12 Petalled Lotus, the Heart Qualities are possibilities to explore rather than standards to achieve.
Their expression can develop through relationship, experience, embodiment and choice.

A Body of Learning That Continues to Live
12 Petalled Lotus draws from many places that help us understand human beings: human development, attachment, psychology, nervous-system understanding, embodied practice, relationship, caregiving, grief and loss, philosophy, contemplative traditions, lived experience and reflective inquiry.
Each offers a different way of seeing and understanding some part of human experience.
Our foundational principles distinguish among empirical research, theory, professional understanding, philosophy, contemplative wisdom, lived experience and reflective inquiry, allowing each to contribute what it can to our understanding of human life.
The work continues to learn too.
As knowledge develops, as people bring different lives into the conversation, and as new questions emerge, 12 Petalled Lotus can continue to deepen while remaining grounded in its purpose:
helping human beings understand human life more deeply.
Where 12 Petalled Lotus Came From
12 Petalled Lotus was created by Cindy Butler.
The work is informed by decades of lived experience, observation, learning, listening and inquiry across many parts of human life.
The questions behind it began long before 12 Petalled Lotus had a name.
And then, when the idea for 12PL arrived, those years of questions, experiences and learning had somewhere to go.
