BOUNDARIES ARE EVERYWHERE

Boundaries have become one of the most familiar ideas in conversations about relationships.

We are encouraged to establish them, communicate them, protect them, and respect the boundaries of others. This language has helped many people recognize their limits and take greater responsibility for their wellbeing.

It has also created new questions.

When does a boundary support a relationship? When does it create distance? How do we distinguish a boundary from a rule, request, expectation, or consequence? What happens when two people’s needs and limits conflict?

This course creates room to examine boundaries within the fuller reality of human relationships.

A DEVELOPMENTAL AND RELATIONAL VIEW

Relationships require more than knowing where one person ends and another begins.

They also ask us to develop the capacity to:

recognize what is happening within us

understand what we need

communicate clearly

remain responsive to another person

tolerate disagreement and difference

negotiate competing needs

repair connection when something has gone wrong

Boundaries are one part of this larger relational capacity.

By placing them within a developmental context, we can understand what boundaries offer, why they sometimes become difficult, and how they can support relationships with greater clarity and care.

WHAT WE WILL EXPLORE

Together, we will consider:

what a boundary is and what it is meant to do

the differences between boundaries, requests, expectations, rules, and ultimatums

how personal history can influence the way we establish or respond to boundaries

why some people struggle to recognize their own limits

why another person’s boundary can feel like rejection or punishment

how boundaries can become overly rigid, distant, or controlling

what mutuality and responsibility look like in healthy relationships

how communication, negotiation, and repair fit alongside boundaries

The focus is understanding how boundaries function between real people in real relationships.

HOW THE TWO SESSIONS UNFOLD

Session One

Understanding Boundaries in Relationship

We will explore what boundaries are, how they develop, and why people can experience them so differently.

We will look at the influence of personal history, relational patterns, internal capacity, and the language commonly used around boundaries.

Session Two

Moving From Separation Toward Relational Capacity

We will explore how boundaries interact with communication, responsiveness, mutual responsibility, conflict, and repair.

This session will help participants consider how boundaries can support both individual integrity and meaningful connection.
