About 12 Petalled Lotus

12 Petalled Lotus™ emerged through decades of lived experience, professional practice, and ongoing inquiry into how people come to understand themselves over time.

It reflects a long-standing exploration of human development, relationship, and the ways experience takes shape across a lifetime.

How This Developed

This work has been shaped through experience across body-based practice, relational work, and end-of-life care, alongside years of observing how people adapt, respond, and make meaning of their lives.

A consistent thread of inquiry guided this process:
how people become who they are
how patterns form
how experience is carried and expressed

Over time, these observations began to organize into a cohesive structure.

What began as a series of questions and lived experiences gradually formed a framework capable of holding the complexity of human life while remaining clear and teachable.

12 Petalled Lotus developed through this process as a way to bring these insights together into a form that can be shared and explored.

A Developmental Map

At its core, 12 Petalled Lotus offers a map of human development that reflects the movement of life across time.

It is organized into twelve pathways, each exploring a different aspect of being human while remaining connected to a larger developmental arc.

This map allows people to see how their experiences connect, evolve, and take shape across the lifespan, creating a coherent understanding of their lives.

The Twelve Petal Qualities

The framework draws inspiration from traditional wisdom systems in which the twelve-petalled lotus represents distinct qualities of the heart.

Within this work, these are understood as foundational human capacities that develop through lived experience.

They are experienced as capacities that become known and integrated over time.

How Human Experience Is Understood

This work is grounded in a developmental lens centered on capacity, regulation, and relationship.

These elements shape how experience is felt, processed, and integrated over time.

They also provide a shared language that supports a clear and grounded understanding of human experience.

Methods & Application

The framework is supported through two primary methods:

Embodied Secure Attachment Method™ (ESAM™)
Supports awareness of internal experience and the relational field in real time.

Integrated Human Development Model
Explores how development unfolds across time through relationship.

Together, these provide both a moment-to-moment and lifespan understanding of human experience.

A Living Framework

12 Petalled Lotus continues to evolve through teaching, application, and lived experience.

It offers a way for people to recognize themselves within a larger developmental context, while engaging with their lives in a way that is meaningful and ongoing.

I’m Cindy Butler, creator of 12 Petalled Lotus™

My work has developed through decades of experience across social services, adult education, program development, disability management, managerial and leadership roles, and entrepreneurship, woven through palliative care, relational coaching, and front-line support work in birth and end of life care. As a Registered Massage Therapist and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, I work within a broader body-based approach that integrates multiple modalities.

What connects all of this is a continuous exploration of human development and relationship, which has come together as 12 Petalled Lotus.

Across these roles, and through years of close work with individuals and families, I found myself drawn to the same underlying questions. Over time, it became clear that there was no widely shared, accessible way to understand these experiences in a cohesive way.

What began as separate areas of work gradually came together. The patterns, the questions, the lived experiences, and the professional pathways began to form a single, integrated body of understanding.

12 Petalled Lotus emerged as the expression of this path. It brings together human development, relationship, and lived experience into an educational framework that supports people in recognizing and understanding their lives in a clear and grounded way, including aspects of being human that often remain unnamed or unexplored.

At its heart, this reflects the direction my own life has taken, shaped by both professional experience and personal inquiry. It comes from being a person moving through life and making sense of it along the way.

It holds both a deep personal commitment and a wider intention to contribute to how we understand ourselves and one another, and to support a more compassionate way of being in the world.

Alongside the pathways, I work directly with individuals and groups.

One-to-one sessions offer a space to explore your experience with greater clarity, whether you are moving through a particular moment in your life, making sense of patterns in relationship, or wanting a more grounded understanding of yourself. These sessions are conversational and body-aware in nature, drawing from human development, relational understanding, and somatic practice.

Where appropriate, sessions may include elements of somatic work, including guided awareness and, at times, supportive contact within that context, with the focus on reflection, understanding, and integration rather than massage or treatment-based bodywork.

I also offer speaking and facilitated sessions for groups and retreats, bringing this framework into shared spaces of learning and reflection.

And, quietly at the edge of that work, stands

Centre for Specialized Palliative Education (CSPE)

A professional training ground for those called to accompany others through dying, grief, and legacy. It continues the same thread of compassion, simply in a different setting.

At the heart of it all is one belief: when we remember what it means to be human, everything changes.
