OUR EARLIEST RELATIONSHIPS MATTER

Our parents and caregivers shape the first environments in which we develop.

Through these relationships, we begin learning about connection, safety, emotion, conflict, belonging, and what is expected of us. We also develop ways of adapting to the people and circumstances around us.

Recognizing this influence can bring enormous clarity.

It can also raise difficult questions about blame, responsibility, forgiveness, loyalty, and what we are supposed to do with what we now understand.

This course offers room for a fuller conversation.

UNDERSTANDING WITHOUT REDUCING THE STORY

Families are made up of developing human beings.

Parents bring their own histories, capacities, limitations, relationships, pressures, cultural contexts, and unmet needs into family life. Children develop within those conditions and carry aspects of those experiences forward.

Understanding this larger picture allows us to recognize the impact of our experiences while also seeing the human context in which they occurred.

The aim is an honest and compassionate understanding of:

  • what happened
  • how it affected us
  • what our parents may have been carrying
  • what remains ours to address now
  • what may become possible with greater awareness

Understanding can hold impact, context, grief, responsibility, and complexity at the same time.

WHAT WE WILL EXPLORE

Together, we will consider:

how early relationships shape human development

what children learn through family environments

how adaptations formed in childhood can continue into adulthood

the difference between understanding impact and assigning blame

how parents’ own histories influence the way they parent

why insight into the past can bring grief, anger, compassion, or confusion

how family loyalty can affect what we allow ourselves to recognize

what responsibility means once we begin to understand our patterns

how we can carry our history with greater awareness and choice

This course welcomes complexity. It makes room for experiences of love, injury, effort, limitation, connection, and loss within the same family story.

HOW THE TWO SESSIONS UNFOLD

Session One

How Our Early Relationships Shape Us

We will explore how children develop within relationships and how family environments influence emotional life, identity, expectations, and patterns of connection.

Participants will begin examining the difference between judging the past and understanding its developmental impact.

Session Two

Holding History and Moving Forward

We will explore responsibility, grief, compassion, boundaries, and the choices available to us in adulthood.

The focus will be on developing a wider understanding of ourselves and our families while considering how we want to live and relate now.
